SSMC hosts government and school official's discussion about flu season preparations.
Recognizing the need to share information and plans for the upcoming flu season, Sound Shore Medical Center hosted a lunchtime educational meeting for government and school officials in the service area. Since children and young adults are the most susceptible to the H1N1 virus, those closely involved with these at-risk groups were invited to attend. Representatives from Larchmont, Mamaroneck and New Rochelle as well as Iona College joined SSMC administrators and specialists to discuss this important health topic.
President and CEO of Sound Shore Medical Center, John R. Spicer, welcomed everyone and expressed appreciation for their attendance. The well-attended event included an overview of seasonal flu and H1N1 by SSMC’s Infectious Diseases specialist, Robert Yarrish, MD., and Joseph Ponticiello, MD, Director of the Emergency Department, outlined preparations to handle a potential influx of flu-related complaints.
During a roundtable discussion, participants shared their to-date preparations, their concerns, and their possible needs should an outbreak develop in the immediate area. It was agreed that Sound Shore representatives and school and government officials will be in close contact in order to recognize a spike in flu cases and be prepared to take appropriate actions. Sound Shore Medical Center provided the attendees with handouts that included “Knowing the Difference – Cold versus Flu”, “Ways to Help Prevent the Spread of Colds and Flu”, “Symptoms of the Flu”, “What You Should Do If You Have the Flu”, “When you Should Call Your Healthcare Provider” and “When You Should Seek Immediate Medical Care.” The group is exploring ways to increase public awareness about the flu and the ongoing importance of hand washing to curb the spread of germs.
Commenting on the event, Mr. Spicer said, “Since community outreach is central to the mission of Sound Shore Medical Center, this event marked another opportunity for us to assist the public with their healthcare needs. We are concerned with preventive medicine as well as providing outstanding healthcare when it is needed.” He concluded, “Information sharing was the hallmark of this important community meeting.”
